| Working for progress: A look at highlights of recent days in the House Congress has been working hard to lessen our dependence on foreign oil, make America safer, strengthen our economy, and restore accountability. In recent days, the House has passed legislation to expand nutrition assistance to millions of Americans who cannot afford higher food prices, begin restoring the long term health of our economy by passing a housing bill that is the most comprehensive response yet to the American mortgage crisis, and combat record prices at the pump by directing the President to suspend the filling of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). Also, the House has approved legislation to strengthen our military readiness and ensure that our troops receive the pay and benefits they deserve launch a new GI Bill for a full, four-year education, to make the veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan part of a new American economic recovery, just like after World War II, and require a new direction for the war in Iraq. |

Abercrombie provision gives USS Missouri rent break

The House Armed Services Committee this morning approved the 2009 National Defense Authorization Act, including a provision by Rep. Neil Abercrombie requiring the U.S. Navy to eliminate for two years the $207,000 paid in annual rent by the USS Missouri Memorial Association to keep the legendary battleship moored at Pearl Harbor’s Ford Island.

U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie today said the House Armed Services Committee has authorized his requests for $67.45 million in defense funding in Hawaii that will help to protect marine mammals, clear chemical munitions from the ocean off Oahu, and bolster alternative energy research and high-technology businesses in the islands.
