UH Lab School Sophomore Wins Congressional Art Competition

2007 Competition Draws Most Entrants Ever

Dear Friends:

A University Laboratory School sophomore, Kenory Khuy, will be traveling to Washington, D.C. this month after her artwork was declared the "Best in Show" winner in "Kaha Kii - An Artistic Discovery," the 2007 Congressional Art Competition.

This year's contest in the First Congressional District attracted the largest pool of entrants ever - 167 students from 20 public and private high schools. Kenory's self-portrait, entitled "Speechless," was selected as the overall winner by judges Noe Tanigawa (Hawaii Public Radio), Patrick Ching (Naturally Hawaiian Gifts and Gallery), Marilyn Cristofori (Hawaii Arts Alliance), and Eric Chandler and Takeo Kobayashi (2Couture). The judges cited Khuy's advanced use of color and composition in creating the winning art.

I invite you to see the awards presentation, featuring Kenory and our other winners, on Olelo's Channel 52 at the following times:

6/8/2007, Friday at 10:00 a.m.
6/15/2007, Friday at 10:00 a..m.
6/22/2007, Friday at 6:00 p.m
.

As the First District winner, Kenory's art will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for a year. She won an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to attend the June 28th event honoring all of the winners of congressional district art competitions nationwide - and their work. She also won custom framing, computer software and equipment, and a four year scholarship to Savannah College of Art & Design. Kenory's art teacher, Matt Miller, will accompany her to the U.S. Capitol event.

In addition to "Best in Show," the top 10 students in 2-Dimensional and Computer Generated/Photography categories were honored. Here are the winners:
