Abercrombie statement on Senator Hiram Fong

Honolulu, HI - - Congressman Neil Abercrombie today issued the following statement on the death of former U.S. Senator Hiram Fong:

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Senator Hiram Fong.  I join all Hawaii in extending our deepest sympathy to his family.

“Hiram Fong lived an extraordinary life.  He was truly a Hawaii original, and at the same time, he exemplified the qualities that transformed our state into a modern society and allowed it to attain statehood.

“Born to immigrant parents of into modest circumstances, Senator Fong worked hard and achieved great success in the fields of business and politics.  No matter how high he rose, he always remembered his roots and earned the support of Hawaii’s working families.  His devotion to public service culminated with his post-statehood election to the United States Senate, where he represented our state with dignity and honor.

“The passing of Senator Hiram Fong marks the end of an era.  He will be missed by all of us, but his contributions will be remembered for generations to come.”
