Academy Nominations
Each year, I have the honor of nominating graduating seniors from schools throughout Hawaii's First Congressional District for an appointment to one our nation’s great military academies.
An appointment to a military academy culminates a months-long process that one nominee once described as "arduous, to say the least." For the 1st Congressional District, each application and background information is reviewed by an independent, three-member military academy nominations board. The community representatives who serve voluntarily work independently from my office to ensure every applicant receives a thorough and fair review of his or her qualifications. At the conclusion of that review, the board nominates selected applicants whose names are then submitted to the military academy the applicant wishes to attend. Each academy then conducts its own review of a nominee before deciding whether to offer an appointment.
The Academies
My office may be able to provide qualified applicants with nominations to the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, and U.S. Military Academy. You may click on the respective links below to learn more about them.
Individuals interested in the U.S. Coast Guard Academy may write directly to the academy, which does not participate in the Congressional nominating system. Contact the Director of Admissions; U.S. Coast Guard Academy; New London, Connecticut 06320-4195.
All candidates applying for nominations must be U.S. citizens and legal residents of the 1st Congressional District of Hawaii. They must be at least 17 years-old and not past their 22nd birthday on July 1st of the year of admission to the academy.
Applications for nominations are available via the links below. Or you may send requests for applications to my Honolulu District Office. Applicants should contact my Honolulu District Office anytime after April 1st in their junior year of high school, and files must be completed, and all the information submitted, by November 15th. Nominations are made prior to January 31st. Please click on the two links below to see a Fact Sheet and Application. The Fact Sheet will familiarize applicants with some of the procedures and requirements involved with the nomination process. Print the Application, then complete and fax it to the address listed at the end of the application.

In Congress, I have the privilege of serving as Chairman of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Air and Land Forces—with direct responsibility for the Army and Air Force. In addition, I am a member of the Subcommittee on Readiness. In those positions, I'm acutely aware of what is required of today's military leaders, and I've focused much of my subcommittee work on ensuring that our forces are prepared and equipped to face the challenges in the world. The decision to pursue a nomination to one of our military academies is an important choice in a student's life, and I congratulate them for taking this significant step toward the future.
