The fort was built in 1857 to protect New York Harbor from sea attack. It is presently home to the 77th Army Reserve, the largest reserve unit in the nation. The property, which features New York City landmarks, is also home to several civic groups, city agencies and local soccer and little leagues.

Bowne House

Built in 1661, this former home of John Bowne is the birthplace of religious freedom as he and his fellow Quakers were allowed to worship here. It is one of the oldest structures in New York State and the oldest house in Queens. It is also a New York City landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
