Washington, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-Quitman, urges all Americans to take time out of their schedules and participate in tomorrow's National Day of Prayer.
The National Day of Prayer's early beginnings date back to President Abraham Lincoln's proclamation of a day of "humility, fasting, and prayer," in 1863, according to www.ndp.org.
In 1952, a joint resolution by Congress, signed by President Truman, declared an annual, national day of prayer. In 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every May.
"This day is important to us as Americans because praying for our nation is a tradition that was first started by our Founding Fathers," Alexander said.
"Our Founding Fathers saw fit to pray for America, and, as the Scriptures state, our prayers are needed even more 'for such a time as this.' We, as a nation, need to pray for our soldiers, our nation's leaders and the direction in which our nation is heading."
Area churches in the Fifth Congressional District are conducting services throughout tomorrow.
"If possible, let's take time out of our day to reflect on this important day," Alexander added.
