The Daniel Pearl Freedom of the Press Act Passes the House
Posted by: Adam Schiff (06-15-2009, 10:42 AM)

On June 10th, I spoke on the House floor in support of a bill to reauthorize and reform the State Department. The text of the bill includes legislation I introduced earlier this year called the Daniel Pearl Freedom of the Press Act. The Daniel Pearl Act is named in honor of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl who was kidnapped and murdered by terrorists in Pakistan in 2002. It would establish an annual State Department report on press freedom worldwide and create a grant program aimed at strengthening independent media around the world. We take a free press for granted, but around the world independent media provide one of the strongest checks on abuses of power and corruption. Take a minute to watch the speech, and click here to learn more about the Daniel Pearl Freedom of the Press Act.

Setting the Record Straight on Guantanamo
Posted by: Adam Schiff (05-13-2009, 03:57 PM)

Oliver North criticized me on Fox News last week for saying we need due process for detainees at Guantanamo.  If you watch my remarks, I make the case that how we treat detainees sends a powerful message to the rest of the world about whether we are willing to abide by the same rule of law that we urge on other nations. I also emphasize that there will be no easy answers to unraveling the legal mess at Guantanamo, a quagmire inherited from the last administration. Take a look and let me know your thoughts.

Posted by: Adam Schiff (04-29-2009, 04:24 PM)

Many are concerned about the confirmed outbreak of the H1N1 virus, also know as swine flu, in the U.S. and Mexico. Everyone should take this outbreak seriously and prepare in case the virus spread.  However, there is no need for panic.

Posted by: Adam Schiff (01-29-2009, 11:10 AM)

Last night, the House voted on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, a bill to stimulate the economy and create jobs.  The bill passed on a vote of 244-188, and is now going to be considered by the Senate.  During debate, I gave a short statement on the Floor of the House in support of stimulus.  You can watch the video clip above, or click here to read the text of my statement.  I hope you'll weigh in using the comments section with your thoughts.
