During Hispanic Heritage Month in 2003, I introduced legislation to take the first step toward realizing an idea that has long fueled the beliefs and aspirations of millions of Americans who believe that our nation’s museums should reflect America. Last week, nearly five years later, the Commission to Study the Potential Creation of a National Museum of the American Latino Act became law.

Fighting Gun Violence

Yesterday morning I joined mayors, police chiefs and civic leaders from around the country at a hearing of the bipartisan Congressional Task Force on Illegal Guns to shine a spotlight on the plague of gun violence. Many of these leaders were in Washington, D.C., to attend the Mayors Against Illegal Guns 2008 summit. Shortly before the summit, the coalition of mayors released a fascinating national poll showing broad support among Americans, regardless of political party, for common sense measures to prevent gun crimes. In fact, the poll shows that 71 percent of Americans rank stopping gun violence as a top national priority.

A Taxpayer Bill of Rights

I found this reader comment in my recent “Tax Time” post very telling of the economic mood of the country: “despite our advanced degrees and professional careers, the mobility past generations used to enjoy appear [sic] beyond our reach... tax time, like no other time on the calendar, reminds of this.”

Remembering the Legacy of Cesar Chavez

Senator Robert F. Kennedy called him "one of the heroic figures of our time."  Cardinal Roger M. Mahoney called him "a special prophet for the worlds' farm workers." I call him a true leader whose service sowed a fruitful harvest that will continue to inspire and guide us for generations to come.
