WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman Marion Berry (D-AR, 1st) joined Senators Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) and Mark Pryor (D-AR) today to announce $404,085 for Safe Passage, Inc. of Izard County through the Rural Domestic Violence and Child Victimization Enforcement Grant Program.
The program implements certain provisions of the Violence Against Women Act, which was enacted in September 1994. The program creates and enhances partnerships between criminal justice agencies, victim services providers and community organizations to provide services to the victims of domestic violence, dating violence and child abuse.
Safe Passage, Inc. is a non-profit, non-governmental victim services organization which will implement several activities with these funds, including:
· Develop a plan and curriculum to educate in the schools, the community and churches to raise awareness of domestic violence and sexual assault prevention;
· Conduct support groups;
· Create and distribute videos and brochures documenting victim experiences;
· Establish a shelter for battered women and their children;
· Establish a 24-hour hotline;
· Conduct parenting classes; and other activities.
