Arkansas Communities to Receive COPS Grants

WASHINGTON – Members of the Arkansas Congressional delegation announced that three Arkansas communities will receive a total of $124,688 in law enforcement grants through the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program.

The grants, announced Thursday by U.S. Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor and U.S. Representatives Marion Berry, Mike Ross, and John Boozman, are administered through the U.S. Department of Justice under the “Homeland Security Overtime Program.”  This grant program was established to respond to the increased demands placed on state and local law enforcement agencies as a result of the ongoing threat of terrorism.

The overtime grants will supplement locally-funded officer overtime budgets of one year, covering up to 75 percent of projected total overtime costs associated with homeland security training, increased patrols, and other activities related to crime prevention.  Communities receiving these grants are required to make a “cash match” of  25 percent.

The following Arkansas communities received Homeland Security Overtime grants:

Pine Bluff        $94,226

Turrell            $5,462

Van Buren      $25,000
