Berry Secures Language to Move Blytheville and Osceola Harbor Projects Forward

WASHINGTON – U.S. Congressman Marion Berry (AR, 1st) announced today that he was able to secure language in the House version of the Water Resources Development Act to build and expand two harbors along the Mississippi River in Mississippi County. This language will ensure that projects in Blytheville and Osceola remain a top priority with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The proposed Blytheville Harbor would be located on the Mississippi River between the Nucor-Yamato and Nucor-Hickman steel mills. Congressman Berry was able to secure funds in last year’s Energy and Water Appropriations bill to continue a feasibility study of the Blytheville Harbor site. The study proved that the project would bring significant economic benefits to Mississippi County. The most recent language in the Water Resources Development Act would require the Secretary of the Corps of Engineers to carry out the project as long as he finds it economically feasible.

“After years of work to get the Blytheville Harbor built, I am confident that construction is just around the corner,” said Congressman Berry. “This project would pump thousands of dollars into a region long overdue for job growth and development. I can assure you I intend to fight for this project until the harbor is complete and business comes to Blytheville.”

Congressman Berry was also able to secure key language in the bill that would allow local interests to construct a mooring and berthing facility at the Osceola Harbor. These new facilities would expand grain operations at the site and bring in a significant amount of new revenue for the Northern Delta region.

“The Port of Osceola has experienced significant growth over the past few years and actually has to turn away business because its facilities are already operating at maximum capacity,” said Congressman Berry. “I am pleased that my colleagues and the Corps of Engineers recognize the tremendous economic potential at the Osceola Harbor.”

The Water Resources Development Act passed the U.S. House of Representatives on July 14, 2005 and has been referred to the U.S. Senate for further consideration. Congressman Berry will continue to work with Senators Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor to ensure that the language for Blytheville and Osceola Harbors is included in the final version of the legislation.
