Housing and Community Opportunity Subcommittee to Hold Hearing on Use of Emergency CDBG funds in the Gulf Coast
Washington, DC – Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), chairwoman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Housing and Community Opportunity, today announced that the subcommittee will hold a hearing to examine the use of emergency Community Development Block Grant funds in the Gulf Coast.
Following Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma, Congress appropriated $11.5 billion in CDBG funds to Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. These funds were intended to be used for unmet housing needs. However, the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s recent approval of Mississippi’s transfer of $600 million from a housing program to the restoration of the Port of Gulfport has raised concerns.
“This hearing will serve to provide much needed oversight of these CDBG programs,” said Chairwoman Waters. “I look forward to hearing from the witnesses about how the programs have worked in their states, what problems or challenges they have encountered, and how the programs can be improved. In addition, it is important that the hearing shed light on Mississippi’s transfer of housing funds to the Port of Gulfport.”
