North Shore Suburbs Fighting Back Against Gangs

Violent streets gangs aren't just preying on Chicago and its surrounding suburbs anymore.

As WBBM's Regine Schlesinger reports police and officials on the North Shore say the gangs are now a plague in their communities as well.

Joined by police officials from the Lake County suburbs, North Shore Congressman Mark Kirk says the gangs have spread out from Chicago and now many members are living in places like Mundelein, North Chicago and Waukegan.

Andy Traver with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, says the gangs were displaced when Chicago began demolishing CHA high-rises.

While violent crime was down statewide over the last few years, in Lake County, it's risen more than 3 percent. Raymond Rose, the police chief of Mundelein, says the suburbs are now fighting back.

Armed with an $846,000 federal grant, they're forming the Northern Illinois Gang Taskforce and are out with a list of their "10 most wanted," street gang members who live in Lake County and are wanted on charges from murder to drug-dealing.
