Amount Requested: $1,600,000
The funding will be used by the Town of Chesterton to plan, design and construct improvements to County Road (CR) 1050 North from 11th Street to CR 50 East, approximately half a mile. The project will replace the existing two-lane road with a new four-lane road and construct sidewalks along one side of the new roadway. CR 1050 North has become a local arterial road in recent years due to increased residential development and its adjacency to Chesterton High School. The road was originally built as a two-lane county road and was not designed for the traffic volumes currently experienced, nor the additional traffic expected as residential growth continues nearby. This project will enhance the ability of the residents and the general public to safely and efficiently move between State Roads 49 and 149. Further, the installation of sidewalks will encourage more foot traffic to and from the high school.
