Plan, design, engineer, conduct environmental review, reconstruct, and widen Indianapolis Boulevard, East Chicago, IN

Amount Requested: $1,400,000
The funding will be used by the City of East Chicago to reconstruct and widen Indianapolis Boulevard (US Route 20) between Columbus Drive and Michigan Street.  The project will widen the right lane of traffic in each direction to help promote vehicle and pedestrian safety.  Project activities will include reconstructing and relocating the curb line, street drains, landscaping and signage.  The preliminary engineering is completed for the project and no additional right-of-way is required.  The project has regional significance because Indianapolis Boulevard is located in East Chicago’s business corridor that connects three state routes – State Roads 12, 312, and 152.  Widening of the narrow lanes will relieve congestion and improve vehicle and pedestrian safety in the business district.  In the past six years there have been a total of 1,200 traffic accidents in the project area, with a large percentage caused by the narrow traffic lanes.  Further, by mitigating congestion the project will result in a drop in vehicular emissions.
Recipient Address: City of East Chicago, 4257 Indianapolis Boulevard, East Chicago, IN 46312
