Amount Requested: $2,080,000
The funding will be used by the Town of Merrillville to widen and improve 101st Avenue from Georgia Street to Mississippi Street. The project will widen the roadway from 22 feet to 48 feet, widen the bridge over Interstate 65, and install curbs, gutters, storm sewers, thermoplastic pavement markings and signage. Activities that will be undertaken include planning, design, any necessary acquisition of right-of-way, and construction. The project will enhance safety by increasing the currently inadequate sight distance for drivers. Further, the installation of storm sewers will eliminate standing water and poor side ditch drainage, resulting in fewer weather related traffic backups. Also, the newly installed storm sewers will benefit the environment by having catch basins designed to trap sediment and debris in a sump to be removed at each inlet.
