Amount Requested: $11,560,000 The funding will be used by the Towns of Munster, Highland, Schererville, and Dyer to design and reconstruct Main Street from US Route 41 to Sheffield Avenue. The centerline of Main Street forms the border between Munster and Highland and Schererville and Dyer. The project will be constructed as a joint project with the local share funded by the percentage of construction within each community. The Main Street Project is regionally significant because it services four communities and will complete a link to US 41 and the Village of Lynwood, Illinois, providing economic development opportunities for each community. The project will include the installation of sidewalks for pedestrian safety. The project will be constructed to include left turn lanes and center turn lanes, as warranted, to provide for safer turning movements while maintaining efficiency in the movement of traffic. The project would mitigate congestion issues now occurring on US 41, which would benefit each of the communities. The Towns of Highland and Schererville have large shopping centers near the project area and an efficient highway would promote consumers from Illinois to shop in Indiana. The Towns of Munster and Dyer have large tracts of vacant property that will be opened up for development. Upon selection, the communities will enter into an Interlocal Government Cooperation Agreement. The Town of Munster, with the largest local share of the project cost, would serve as the lead agency in the project.
