Plan, engineer, acquire right-of-way, and construct an underpass to allow the connection of Oak Street at the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks, Schererville, IN

Amount Requested: $2,600,000
The funding will be used by the Town of Schererville to construct an underpass for the proposed Oak Street extension at the Norfolk Southern railroad.  The railroad tracks have an elevation separation grade of 25 feet that prevents an at-grade crossing from being constructed.  This project will allow for the extension of Oak Street and the connection of Kennedy Avenue and US Route 41.  The project will create a much needed through street, alleviating congestion on US 41 and encouraging new development in the area, which includes former industrial sites that are currently unused.  Further, when completed, the project will allow traffic to move through the town along Kennedy Avenue and avoid the frequently congested US 41 and US 30 corridors.  The extension of Oak Street will also benefit public safety by giving first responders an alternate route through the town.
Recipient Address: Town of Schererville, 10 East Joliet Street, Schererville, IN 46375
