Amount Requested: $792,000 The funds will be used by the Town of Porter to engineer, design, and conduct a transit study for the reconstruction of approximately 1.5 miles of Indiana 49 (State Road 49) between Interstate 94 and the Indiana Dunes State Park. The goal of the reconstruction is to create a “Gateway to the Indiana Dunes.” The proposed project will result in upgraded travel lanes and one transit lane, signal modernization (with pedestrian cross-walks), streetlights, ribbon-curbs, driveway aprons, storm water conveyance systems, and native landscaping. The proposed transit system will provide greater access to lakefront destinations to those who arrive in Duneland via the South Shore Rail Road. Improved safety, aesthetic enhancements, and upgraded utility systems will result in greater economic development opportunities along the corridor, thus creating new jobs and increasing the local tax base. Additionally, improvements to the corridor will help address water quality concerns in the Lake Michigan watershed. The proposed transit system will provide improved access to lakeshore destinations limiting the carbon footprint associated with idling cars waiting to access the Indiana Dunes State Park and National Lakeshore.
