Amount Requested: $4,925,000 The funding will be used by the City of Valparaiso to reconstruct Silhavy Road between Evans Avenue and Burlington Beach Road. Silhavy Road is an arterial roadway on the eastern side of Valparaiso which has become a bypass of State Road 49 and is subject to ever increasing traffic counts. The project will result in a full depth reconstruction of the roadway with improvements to the two lane road to include a designated center, two way, left turn lane, with curbs and gutters. Other improvements will include utility relocation, storm sewer improvements, signage upgrades, sidewalks on both sides of the road, bicycle lanes, bike trail head, bus shelters, emergency vehicle preemption devices, and the future need for transit preemption devices. The project will improve security for motorists by adding a center turn lane that will reduce rear end collisions. Safety will be improved for pedestrians and bicyclists by constructing pathway/bike lanes separated from the vehicles. The project will provide easy, safe, convenient access to job opportunities, offices, and shopping in the commercial developments at the intersection of Silhavy and LaPorte Roads, just south of the project area. The project will improve air quality because of less congestion with the construction of center turn lanes. The bus service and pathway/bike lanes will offer non-motorized alternatives to cars, also resulting in fewer air emissions. Recipient Address: City of Valparaiso, 166 Lincolnway, Valparaiso, IN 46383 |
