Amount Requested: $941,000
The funding will be used by the City of Whiting to design, engineer, construct and rehabilitate 117th Street from Atchison Avenue to the entrance of Whiting Park on Lake Michigan. The project will also involve resurfacing Oliver Street from Ohio Street to 117th Street and the replacement of the water main from Oliver Street to Atchison Avenue. This project is regionally significant as it connects with the redevelopment of the Whiting Lakefront Park and supports the Marquette Plan, a project to better utilize Northwest Indiana’s Lake Michigan shore. This project will provide safety benefits by realigning and straightening a dangerous intersection, which has been the site of multiple accidents. In addition, the replacement of the existing deteriorated 6-inch water main will increase reliability of water supply for the north side of the city, providing significant safety benefits for public safety staff when water is needed for fighting fires in this area.
