Congressman Andrews Announces 650 Jobs Bringing Cleaner Energy to South Jersey
West Deptford, NJ - On Wednesday, Congressman Andrews announced that 650 new construction jobs will be coming to West Deptford as LS Power begins building a 738 megawatt, natural gas-fired power plant. Congressman Andrews has been a staunch advocate for bringing more alternative energy projects to South Jersey, including the West Deptford facility. This facility is scheduled for completion in 2014 and expected to lower electricity costs for consumers and businesses across South Jersey.
The West Deptford facility will utilize state-of-the-art combustion technology to supply cleaner, cheaper electricity to as many as 700,000 homes in South Jersey and Northern Delaware. The plant will collect natural gas from two interstate pipelines and will provide a clean-burning alternative to coal. In order to further the green initiative, the plant will not use water from the local drinking supply but instead will use recycled water from the nearby Gloucester County Utilities Authority wastewater treatment plant. Once construction is completed, LS Power expects to hire 30 permanent employees to operate the facility.
“The benefits of this project are threefold,” said Congressman Andrews. “It’s immediately bringing 650 construction jobs to a region that desperately needs them. It will save money for families and businesses at a time when they need all the relief they can get. It will provide cleaner energy for a cleaner environment for New Jersey. This is exactly what our community needs.” Congressman Andrews believes alternative energy technologies like natural gas are a key component to America’s economic recovery. As the American middle class struggles to get back on top, he will continue to throw his strong support behind initiatives that create jobs in South Jersey’s growing alternative energy industry.
