King Addresses “Racist” Charge at Hearing on Muslim-American Radicalization in U.S. Prisons
June 15, 2011
"The purpose of this Committee is to combat Islamic terrorism"
Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Peter T. King (R-NY), Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, convened the second in a series of hearings on Muslim-American radicalization, entitled “The Threat of Muslim-American Radicalization in U.S. Prisons.”
During questioning at the hearing, Democratic Committee Member Rep. Laura Richardson (CA) alleged that the focus of Chairman King’s hearing “can be deemed as racist and as discriminatory.”
Chairman King responded that “the purpose of this Committee is to combat Islamic terrorism because that is the terrorist threat to this country.” King also pointed out that during the entire four years in which the Democrats held the majority on the Committee, they never held a single hearing on prisons, Skinheads, Neo-Nazis, Aryan Nations or white supremacists.
