Weekly Washington Update

From Congressman Jeb Hensarling

This week in Washington, I joined Democrats Barney Frank, Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Rep. Paul Kanjorski and Rep. Elijah Cummings and fellow Republicans Rep. Paul Ryan and Rep. Kevin McCarthy on a special presentation of “Squawk in Session,” on CNBC's “Squawk Box” television program.

The differences between my approach to our economy and the approach advocated by President Obama and Washington Democrats could not have been starker.  During our hour-long debate, I advocated free enterprise solutions, controlling spending, permanent tax relief for small businesses, limited government and unlimited opportunity.  While I respect my Democrat colleagues, they defended a government takeover of your health care and more government control of our economy.

The key to growing our economy again is to provide permanent tax relief to small businesses, the job creation engine of America.  On the other hand, since Congress passed a $1.2 trillion government stimulus plan, what do we have?  Three million more of our countrymen have lost their jobs and 9.8 % unemployment -- the highest level in a quarter of a century.  Clearly “Obamanomics” is not working.
