International Trade as a Growth Engine in the Puget Sound

January 15, 2000

International trade is an important engine of growth in the Puget Sound area and provides thousands of jobs in the region.  If we want to continue our economic prosperity, it is critical that we engage in the global economy, encourage other countries to open their borders to American goods and services, and prepare our workers for the new economy.

Since taking office as the Ninth District Representative, I have supported and advocated these policies.  In fact, I was proud to be one of only five Democrats in Congress to receive an A+ on the USA Engage Congressional Report Card, which evaluated Members of Congress on critical trade issues.

While I strongly support trade and feel it is essential to our economy, we must do a better job of helping all members of our community understand the importance of trade in their lives.  People raise legitimate concerns about how the new economy, with trade as its centerpiece, will affect their lives and the lives of others around the world.  We must shape this economy in a way that improves the lives for all people in our communities and abroad.

The question today is not whether or not trade and globalization will happen, but what we will do about it.  The rules for the new economy are not yet written, and it is up to all of us to play a role in writing those rules so that the trade benefits everyone and enjoys broad support.
