BERRY ENCOURAGES FIREFIGHTERS TO APPLY FOR GRANT PROGRAM

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  U.S. Representative Marion Berry (D-AR, 1st) announced today that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is seeking applications for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program.  This program will award $560 million to fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical service (EMS) organizations.  Applicants have until April 4, 2008, to apply for assistance.

“First responders who put their lives on the line deserve the best equipment and resources available," said Berry.  "The Assistance to Firefighters Grant program gives our rural firefighters an opportunity to apply for the training, equipment and technology necessary to improving emergency response and preparedness for communities across Arkansas."

Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) provides financial assistance directly to fire departments and nonaffiliated EMS organizations to enhance their abilities to fight fire and fire-related hazards.  The grants enable local fire departments and emergency medical services organizations to purchase or receive training, conduct first responder health and safety programs, and buy equipment and response vehicles.
