Little Rock, AR – Little Rock, AR – U.S. Congressman Vic Snyder announced today that the Department of Education granted Philander Smith College in Little Rock an award in the amount of $226,600.00 for 2008. The grant is awarded through the U.S. Department of Education under the Upward Bound Math and Science Program.
"Upward Bound provides these students the opportunity to recognize and develop their math and science potential.” said Congressman Vic Snyder. “This program is a value add to the Philander Smith student body.”
The Upward Bound Math and Science program prepares high school for college majors that lead to careers in the math and science fields. Upward Bound projects offer classes in mathematics, laboratory sciences, composition, literature, and foreign languages. Also supported are programs including tutoring, counseling, mentoring, cultural enrichment, and work-study. Increasing the rate of completion of secondary education and enrolling in and graduating from postsecondary educational institutions are the main goals of the Upward Bound projects.
