January 14, 2008 – Congressman Trent Franks (AZ-02), gave the following statement in response to Israel’s Prime Minister Ehud Olmert statement that Israel rejects "no options" to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
“Any responsible Israeli leader understands that a terrorist sponsor state like Iran must not be allowed to obtain or develop nuclear weapons capability."
“A nuclear Iran is an existential threat to Israel as well as to human freedom everywhere. The world is foolish to place Israel in the untenable position of having to act unilaterally to protect themselves and humanity from the threat a nuclear Iran would represent.”
“While the international media continues broadcasting misguided conclusions based on misunderstanding the most recent National Intelligence Estimate, Iran continues pursuing an aggressive uranium enrichment agenda that entails the use of nearly 3000 centrifuges at its Natanz facility. Consequently, Iran has not been delayed a single day in its goal to develop nuclear weapons. I wish the world understood this critical fact."
“Israel realizes that Iran's nuclear program is currently in the ongoing and unabated process of producing enriched uranium. Once this material is sufficiently enriched, Iran can use it to build a nuclear warhead in a matter of months. The result could be a ballistic nuclear missile or, worse, a terrorist weapon small enough to be smuggled into Israel— or, for that matter, the U.S. homeland.”
