| WASHINGTON – Congressman George Radanovich (R-Mariposa) today voted to pass H.R. 5140, the Recovery Rebates and Economic Stimulus for the American People Act, and send the bill to President Bush to be signed into law.
"In this time of burgeoning economic concern, Americans can rest a little easier knowing that some of their hard earned money will be taken out of the hands of the Democrat controlled Congress and placed back in the pocketbooks of the people who earned it," Radanovich said. H.R. 5140 was amended by the Senate to exclude from eligibility illegal aliens and those without a valid Social Security number or only a Tax ID number. Senate amendments also made eligible disabled veterans and low income seniors. "While I do not believe this legislation went far enough in providing significant tax reform, such as indexing the capital gains rate for inflation and permanently lowering the corporate income rate, Congress has a duty to the American public to produce results when they are needed," Radanovich said. "Whether the tax rebates and incentives included in this legislation will effectively stimulate the economy remains to be seen. However, I trust the American people know what to do with their money more than Nancy Pelosi does." "Through strong bipartisan efforts I think we reached the best possible compromise, that could pass this Congress, on an economic stimulus package," Radanovich said. # # # |
