WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Lois Capps secured $3.5 million for water projects in Ventura County as part of the FY06 Energy and Water Appropriations bill that was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives late last night.
The bill includes $1.1 million in funding for additional pre-construction engineering and design work on the Matilija Dam Removal and Habitat Restoration.
“Removal of the dam is a key component of this effort to protect the watershed and restore habitat for endangered species, including Steelhead, and the natural flow of sand to the coast,” Congresswoman Capps said. “The project has bipartisan support and no opposition.”
An additional $2.3 million in funding is including for dredging in Ventura and Channel Islands harbors.
Annual dredging of Ventura Harbor entrance is necessary in order to maintain a channel that boats can navigate. The harbor generates more than $40 million in gross receipts annually and contributes greatly to the local job base, a significant portion of which are associated with the commercial fishing industry. Commercial vessels transporting the nearly 100,000 visitors per year to and from the Channel Islands National Park islands operate out of Ventura Harbor. The bill includes $2 million for this project.
Annual dredging of the Channel Islands Harbor entrance is necessary in order to maintain a channel that boats can navigate. The bill includes $310,000 million for this project.
“Dredging of the local harbors is critical to maintaining the Central Coast’s precious natural resources and for promoting infrastructure and a sound economy,” said Capps. “This funding will allow annual dredging projects to keep our waterways flowing, safe and secure recreation areas for our residents, and screenings to ensure our environment is healthy and prosperous.”
Funding for projects is not final until the Senate passes their version of the bill and differences between the versions are worked out in conference.
“I will keep fighting to ensure this funding is included in the final bill,” Capps promised. “I will continue to focus on the projects the Central Coast needs to protect out coastlines.”
These projects are part of the $6.5 million in local energy and water projects Capps secured for Central Coast.
