Rep. Baca Leads Hearing on Children's Nutrition and Health

Washington, DCCongressman Joe Baca (D-Rialto) today convened the first hearing of House Agriculture Committee’s Subcommittee on Department Operations, Oversight, Nutrition and Forestry, which he chairs in the 110th Congress.

The hearing investigated the relationship between the Federal Food Stamp program and children’s nutrition and health.  Testimony was heard from Under Secretary Nancy Montenez-Johner, Janet Murguia, the President of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), as well as pediatric health professionals and nutrition experts.

The hearing emphasized the link between adequate nutrition and long-term health to curb the increased incidence of obesity and diabetes -- and to support the ability of children to learn and succeed well past their childhood.

Rep. Baca said, “I am concerned about the obesity epidemic in America, especially among children.  This is a serious health risk for them and their families and also will have a harmful impact on our communities and economy.  As Chair of the nutrition subcommittee, I intend to focus attention on this problem and make sure we are providing information and resources that enable people to make sound decisions about a nutritious diet and healthy lifestyle.”

Testimony at the hearing reinforced findings that the problem of hunger is linked to obesity and diabetes.  Written statements submitted by the witnesses are posted on the Committee’s website: http://agriculture.house.gov/hearings/statements.html.

Rep Baca said, “Making sure every child in America is adequately fed is compassionate and moral.  In addition, spending on nutrition programs is cost-effective because preventing poor health is far cheaper than treating diseases that result from malnourishment.”
