President Signs Baca Bill Honoring Bea Watson

Santa Ana Ave. Post Office in Fontana to be Renamed the "Beatrice E. Watson Post Office"

Washington, DC – It was announced today that President Bush signed into law legislation introduced by Congressman Joe Baca (D-Rialto), to honor the late Bea Watson, a dedicated public servant and friend to many in the Fontana community.  The bill, H.R. 3569, designates the Post office at 16731 Santa Ana Avenue in Fontana, California, as the Beatrice E. Watson Post Office Building.  The legislation first passed the House of Representatives on November 13, 2007, and was unanimously passed by the Senate on December 19, 2007.

“I am pleased the President took quick action on signing this legislation that commemorates the life of a woman who has given so much to California and the Inland region,” said Rep. Baca.   “Bea Watson is a true role model for all of us.  Her impact on Fontana has created a legacy that will last for many generations to come.”

Bea Watson died on August 5, at the age of 83.  In over 45 years of life in Fontana, she served as an elected city councilmember and clerk, Historical Society officer, Women’s Club president, Chamber of Commerce member, and organizer of annual parades and festivals.  Because of her dedication to the community she loved, Bea was known to the many who admired her as “Mrs. Fontana”.

“Bea was a person who led by example and a tireless friend to the people of Fontana,” said Rep. Baca.  “From organizing the Fontana Days parades and annual prayer breakfasts, to her many works as an officer of the Women’s Club and Fontana Historical Society, her efforts touched the lives of all of us in the Inland area.”

“While we are saddened by the loss of Bea, we fondly remember her smile and service,” added Rep. Baca.  “As a volunteer, public servant, and friend to her community, Bea always gave of herself in order to help others.  It is fitting we rename the Santa Ana Avenue post office in her honor.  Even though she has passed on, she will continue to serve as an inspiration to us all.”

Now that the President has signed H.R. 3569, the bill will be given a Public Law number and sent to the U.S. Postal Service.  Details on the dedication ceremony at the Santa Ana Avenue Post Office in Fontana will be released once the Postal Service finalizes a date.
