Rep. Baca Introduces Legislation to Recognize Cinco de Mayo

Resolution Recognizes Significance of Historic Date

Washington, DCYesterday, Congressman Joe Baca (D-Rialto) introduced legislation in the House of Representatives that recognizes the significance of the Mexican holiday, Cinco de Mayo.  The Cinco de Mayo resolution, H. Res. 230, calls for Congressional recognition of the holiday and encourages the United States to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies.

“Cinco de Mayo is a time of celebration, particularly among our country’s significant Mexican American population, which takes great pride in its history and culture,” said Rep. Baca.  “By celebrating this important day, we honor the history of democracy in North America and remind ourselves that though our nation is made up of many diverse people and cultures, we all share a commitment to democratic freedom.”

The Cinco de Mayo holiday pays tribute to the Mexican patriots who gave their lives to fight valiantly and successfully against an overwhelming French army at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862.  Cinco de Mayo has become one of Mexico's most famous national holidays and is celebrated annually by nearly all Mexicans and Mexican-Americans, north and south of the United States-Mexico border.

“While we all enjoy festive celebrations of Cinco de Mayo, the holiday is much more than a party,” concluded Rep. Baca.  “It’s a celebration of cultural pride and of the rights of all people to live freely.”
