House Passes Baca Legislation Recognizing Cinco de Mayo

Resolution Recongizes the Significance of Historic Date

Washington, DCToday, the House of Representatives passed legislation introduced by Congressman Joe Baca (D-Rialto) that recognizes the significance of the Mexican holiday, Cinco de Mayo.  The Cinco de Mayo resolution, H. Res. 230, calls for Congressional recognition of the holiday and encourages the United States to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies.  The legislation passed the House with a 395 to 0 vote.

“Our country’s significant Mexican American population takes great pride in its history and culture,” said Rep. Baca.  “Cinco de Mayo is an important day in not just the history of Mexico, but also the history of democracy in North America.  By celebrating the importance of this day, we remind ourselves that though our nation is made up of many diverse people and cultures, we all share a commitment to democratic freedom.”

The Cinco de Mayo holiday pays tribute to the Mexican patriots who gave their lives to fight valiantly and successfully against an overwhelming French army at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862.  Cinco de Mayo has become one of Mexico's most famous national holidays and is celebrated annually by nearly all Mexicans and Mexican-Americans, north and south of the United States-Mexico border.

“While we all enjoy many festive celebrations on May 5th, the Cinco de Mayo holiday is much more than an excuse to have a good time,” concluded Rep. Baca.  “Cinco de Mayo marks an important celebration of cultural pride, and a remembrance of the rights of all people to live freely.”
