Rep. Baca Statement on the Passing of Sen. Edward Kennedy

Washington, DCCongressman Joe Baca (D-Rialto) issued the following statement today on the passing of Senator Edward M. Kennedy:

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of my friend and colleague in the U.S. Congress, Senator Ted Kennedy.”

“Senator Kennedy’s history of service to his nation and record of legislative accomplishment remain unparalleled.  His vision and passion led him to fight as a champion for all Americans, especially the impoverished and vulnerable, on issues ranging from civil rights, to health care, to economic equality, and immigration reform.”

“Senator Kennedy served as a constant voice for the underserved in the Senate.  His leadership secured passage for legislation that changed America for the better – including the 1965 Voting Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Mental Health Parity Act, legislation to raise the minimum wage, legislation to establish the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, the Patients Bill of Rights, and so much more.”

“Even in his final years in Congress, Senator Kennedy was instrumental in introducing bold and meaningful legislation to work towards a comprehensive immigration reform.  He remained a champion on the issue, always standing for justice, equality, and the reunification of families.”

“Today our nation has lost a great leader, who carried on the legacy of his fallen brothers, and became one of the greatest men to ever serve in the U.S. Congress.  The thoughts and prayers of my family and I goes out to the Kennedy family, and to the people of Massachusetts at this difficult time.”
