Bill Calls for Reflection, Education on the Contributions of Veterans Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Joe Baca (D-Rialto) introduced legislation in the House of Representatives that calls for greater recognition and support of the Veterans Day Holiday. The Veterans Day Resolution supports greater recognition of Veterans Day by encouraging Americans to demonstrate their support for veterans each year by treating the Holiday as a special day of reflection. “Veterans Day is not just another day off of school or work,” said Rep. Baca. “It is a day of reflection to honor and remember those who have defended our country. I introduced this legislation because I believe we should never forget America’s true heroes. We must reflect on the meaning of Veterans Day, and remember the sacrifices made by so many proud American sons and daughters.” In addition to calling for greater recognition and reflection of the Veterans Day Holiday, the resolution also encourages schools and teachers to educate our children about the many contributions that veterans have made to our society – both during and after their service in the military. “As an Army veteran myself, I am all too aware of the hardships our military men and women and their families endure to protect our country,” concluded Rep. Baca. “Our veterans deserve to be honored by all Americans. I am proud to author this resolution calling for greater recognition of Veterans Day, and I will continue to work in Congress to make sure all of America’s veterans receive the proper health care, benefits, and respect they rightfully deserve." Rep. Baca is a veteran who served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper with both the 101st and the 82nd Airborne Divisions from 1966-68. Rep. Baca introduced a similar resolution last Congress, H. Res. 237, which passed the House of Representatives in October of 2007. # # # |
