(Washington D.C.)- Congressman Brian Bilbray (R-CA) announced today that he will succeed Congressman Tom Tancredo (R-CO) as chairman of the Immigration Reform Caucus (IRC). “Congressman Bilbray was asked to lead the IRC because of his pragmatic approach to the illegal immigration issue,” Congressman Tancredo said. “Brian has held the line against amnesty, fought for border security and will be a terrific leader of the Immigration Reform Caucus.”
Outlining his goals for the IRC, Congressman Bilbray said, “Congressman Tancredo has played an instrumental role in keeping the illegal immigration issue at the forefront of national attention. I look forward to building on his foundation and working to keep the IRC engaged in the illegal immigration policy debate. I hope to expand the Immigration Reform Caucus to include lawmakers from both parties who share our commitment to address illegal immigration in America,” he continued.
House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) said, “Congressman Bilbray grew up along the border and knows first-hand how illegal immigration impacts our communities. His leadership and intimate understanding of the illegal immigration issue will help advance the goals of the Immigration Reform Caucus,” said Boehner.
“The federal government’s refusal to act has only exacerbated the problems associated with illegal immigration,” Congressman Bilbray said. “As Chairman of the Immigration Reform Caucus, I am calling on both the House and Senate to take action now. Republican, Democrats and the White House can agree that we need real employer enforcement and border security. Let’s at least take action on the things we agree on,” he continued.
The Immigration Reform Caucus was established in 1999 and has a membership of 91 members in the House of Representatives.
