Statement by Congressman Blackburn

August 3, 2007

washington d.c. — Early this morning House Democrats displayed an unprecedented abuse of power by trying to reverse a recorded vote on the House floor.  During consideration of the Motion to Recommit H.R. 3161, legislation to fund FY 2008 Agriculture Appropriations, Republicans attempted to add language to the bill prohibit illegal immigrants from receiving taxpayer-funded Federal benefits.  Yet the House Democrat Leadership reversed the vote following an apparent Republican victory.

In response to the event Congressman Blackburn issued this statement today:

"On late Thursday night the Liberal Leadership of this Congress dictated to the American people that it is more important to pay, feed, and shelter illegal immigrants with taxpayer money than it is for the Voice of the People to be heard.  They have now made their priorities known by rigging the vote to prohibit illegal immigrants from receiving Federal benefits.  In so doing, the Liberal Leadership chose to place benefits for illegal immigrants above the needs of the American taxpayer.

"Their action was a historic and unprecedented stand against our system of representative democracy that puts American freedom and national security at risk."
