WASHINGTON, DC – Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) promoted U.S. Representative Diana DeGette (D-CO) to Chief Deputy Whip on January 3, 2005.
"Congresswoman DeGette is a smart and hard working member of Congress who earned this promotion into leadership. Her involvement in Democrats' victories in Colorado showed that Diana understands what is important to her state and region, and this new leadership position will enable her to work even more effectively for her constituents,” said Whip Hoyer.
"I look forward to working even more closely with Democratic Whip Hoyer and the Whip organization in the 109th Congress as the Chief Deputy Whip," said Rep. DeGette. "Democrats will work to find common ground with the Republican Majority whenever it is in the best interest of our nation. Our party, however, remains united in standing up for common-sense policies that will help improve American families' health, pocketbooks and education."
As Chief Deputy Whip, Rep. DeGette will develop senior strategy and serve on the Democratic Caucus Steering and Policy Committee. She has steadily risen in leadership since her first term in Congress in 1997. From 1997 through 2002, Rep. DeGette served as a Regional Whip. In 2003, she was named the first Democratic Floor Whip. The Congresswoman served in that position for the 108th Congress.
"As a member of the Democratic Leadership, I will have additional opportunities to work for the best interests of my constituents," said Rep. DeGette.
