WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) released the following statement concerning her vote against H.R. 5254, the Refinery Permit Process Schedule Act.
“The Republicans have one answer to energy: give oil companies another break. Two weeks ago they gave big oil the right to drill in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge, one of the last pristine areas in Alaska. Now they want to allow companies like Exxon to sidestep environmental laws to provide an incentive to build new oil refineries. Neither of these will help American families at the pump.
“I voted against this bill because it is completely unnecessary. Even the oil companies admit that there is no evidence that environmental regulations have delayed or prevented the construction of new refineries.
“With gas at more than $3 a gallon, the last thing we should do is give the oil companies another break. The Republicans need to stop finding new ways to help the oil industry and get serious about our energy security."
