WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA), the Chairman-Designate of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, today congratulated the newly-elected Democratic members of the House of Representatives who will be joining the Committee when Congress convenes in January.
“I am excited to work with these new members of the Committee on our key focus of strengthening America’s middle class,” said Miller. “We have a lot of work to do, and these freshman members will bring new ideas and new energy to that work. I welcome them to our caucus.”
Yesterday, the Democratic Steering Committee assigned six incoming freshman members to the Education and the Workforce Committee. They are:
- Congressman-elect Jason Altmire of Pennsylvania
- Congressman-elect Phil Hare of Illinois
- Congressman-elect Dave Loebsack of Iowa
- Congressman-elect John Sarbanes of Maryland
- Congresswoman-elect Carol Shea-Porter of New Hampshire
- Congressman-elect John Yarmuth of Kentucky
The Education and the Workforce Committee has jurisdiction over a broad range of issues: pre-K through high school education; higher education; vocational and technical education and job training; workers’ wages and benefits; worker safety; and private pensions. At a press conference yesterday, Miller discussed his priorities for the Committee in 2007, which focus on strengthening America’s middle class. For more information, click here.
