Washington, DC -- Congressman Vern Buchanan (FL-13) today presented a Navy Cross, Purple Heart and other U.S. military medals to the family of a Korean War veteran killed in action. Buchanan secured these medals on behalf of Woodie Marvin Brewer of Sarasota. Brewer’s late brother, Lt. Donald Brewer, a native of Bartow, Florida, was killed in action on June 19, 1953 and was one of only two Navy aviators to be awarded the Navy Cross – the nation’s second highest decoration -- during the Korean War. “Nothing can make up for your loss,” said Buchanan. “But hopefully receiving these medals will help bring you closure and serve as a reminder of what a courageous hero Donald was. His brave efforts helped protect friendly forces from enemy troops. We are grateful for his service. “ “I have been working a year and a half on this,” said Brewer. “Your staff outdid themselves. Thank you so much.” Brewer completed a bombing attack despite the fact that his plane was seriously damaged by anti-aircraft fire. He was credited with the destruction of 150 yards of trenches containing enemy troops firing at friendly forces before bailing out of the aircraft at an altitude so low his parachute did not have time to open. The Navy Cross is awarded to military men and women who show extraordinary heroism in the presence of great danger or personal risk. The Purple Heart is awarded to those who have been wounded or killed while serving in the U.S. military. Lt. Brewer also earned a National Defense Service Medal, a Korean Service Medal with one bronze star, a United Nations Service Medal and a Republic of Korea War Service Medal. Buchanan presented the medals to Brewer’s sister, Betty Denton and brothers, David and Woodie Brewer.
