Rep. Wasserman Schultz applauds passage of the Violence Against Women Act

Washington, DC - President Bush signed the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) into law this afternoon.  This bill will extend the original VAWA legislation, first enacted in 1994.

"The programs extended by renewing the Violence Against Women Act are critical for women and children across the country.  I am very pleased that the government worked in a bipartisan fashion to pass legislation essential to the lives and livelihoods of women and children suffering from domestic abuse," said Wasserman Schultz.

The VAWA extension passed the United States House of Representatives on September 28, 2005 in the Department of Justice Reauthorization Act by a vote of 415-4.  The bill was presented to President Bush last Tuesday and he signed it into law today.

"Reauthorizing VAWA provides local communities with the tools and resources necessary to continue protecting women and children from domestic violence and sexual assault," said Wasserman Schultz.  "Even more importantly, this legislation provides for early, preventative intervention--which is a crucial step in strengthening families and communities."
