CONGRESSWOMAN MELISSA BEAN HAILS RETURN TO
PAY-AS-YOU-GO BUDGET RULES

Bean sees success of longtime goal with restoration of rules controlling deficit spending

Washington, D.C. - Today Congresswoman Melissa Bean (IL-08) voted to restore “pay-as-you-go” (PAYGO) budget rules designed to restrain congressional deficit spending.  The effort to restore fiscal responsibility and help slow the rapid growth of the national debt has long been a priority for Bean.  This morning she spoke in favor of the change before a majority of the House agreed to restore PAYGO rules that were successfully adhered to in the 1990s, but later abandoned.

“One of the reasons I came to Congress was to bring real world business perspective to government,” Bean said.  “In the business world, accountability and results matter.  To get our fiscal house in order, Congress must do what every business does—balance its books.  If it’s worth doing, it’s worth paying for.  We must pay-as-we-go. It is a simple concept with a proven track record.  I am pleased Congress is returning from the recent borrow and spend budget irresponsibility to the fiscal soundness and accountability our constituents expect.  By reinstituting pay-as-you-go budget rules, accountability in government will be more than just a catch phrase.”

The PAYGO provision, included in a new House rules package, prohibits the consideration of any legislation proposing direct spending or revenue changes that would increase the budget deficit within a five-year or a ten-year time frame.
