Schakowsky Statement on the 4,000th Death of the Iraq War

Washington, D.C.- U.S. Representative Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) released the following statement on a grim milestone for the war in Iraq.

Less than a week after the fifth anniversary of the war, we are confronted with another grim milestone as we mourn the loss of 4,000 American troops. Today is a sad day for military families and for our nation.  As we pause to recognize the bravery of our military men and women and the sacrifices that they have made for our country, we must also stop to question a war that has cost 4,000 American lives.

Nearly five years ago, President Bush stood under the “mission accomplished” banner to claim victory.  Since then, the numbers of American and Iraqi deaths and injuries have grown.  The cost of the war has soared.  And, if the Bush policies are allowed to continue, there is no end in sight.  Experts predict the war could cost $3 trillion – but there is no estimate on the number of dead and wounded.

It is time to stop the Bush war in Iraq – to bring our soldiers home. As even General Petraeus has said, we cannot win through military force – since the “surge” began, we have lost over 900 American troops.

As we mourn the loss of lives and the impacts on families left behind, we commit ourselves to changing course and stopping this endless and devastating war.
