Rep. Johnson Hosts Miss America, Erika Harold on Capitol Hill

Washington DC… The new Miss America 2003, Erika Harold, is visiting Washington DC this week and is the honored guest at several Capitol Hill meetings and receptions.  U.S. Rep. Tim Johnson (IL-15) has organized part of Harold’s trip to Washington, including a private reception with Members and staff of the Illinois Congressional delegation.

“The amount of pride I feel, the Champaign-Urbana community feels and the State of Illinois collectively feels is immense,” said Johnson.  “I cannot think of a more deserving person to carry this honor and be a role model for every citizen.”

Rep. Johnson and Miss America, Erika Harold share Urbana as their hometown and the University of Illinois as their Alma Mater.

“Erika’s parents and grandparents have been long-time family friends of mine,” said Johnson.  “It is such a thrill that an individual from my hometown has won, and earned the crown of Miss America.  I wish Erika the very best in her future endeavors and I want to extend the most sincere congratulations to her family.  They truly represent what is best in our society.”

During a visit to Rep. Johnson’s Capitol Hill office Tuesday, Miss Harold remarked, “It’s been an honor to be in Washington DC, promoting my platform of youth violence prevention and speaking with public officials, such as Rep. Johnson, who have a strong legacy of protecting young people and their interests.”

Miss Harold’s trip to Washington included meetings with Attorney General John Ashcroft, House Speaker Dennis Hastert and visits to the Department of Education and the White House.
