CONGRESS TO HOLD HEARING ON SAFEGUARDING PHARMACEUTICALS;

  Buyer-Matheson Bill will be Highlighted

Washington, D.C.—Congress will hold a hearing this week, ensuring the safety and security of Americans’ prescription drug supply.  The hearing will include legislation Congressmen Steve Buyer (R-IN) and Jim Matheson (D-UT) recently introduced, the Safeguarding America’s Pharmaceutical Act.

The hearing, titled “Discussion Draft of the ‘Food and Drug Administration Globalization Act’ Legislation: Drug Safety Provisions” will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2008 at 10:00 AM in room 2322 of the Rayburn House Office Building.

Congressmen Buyer and Matheson introduced H.R. 5839, Safeguarding America’s Pharmaceuticals Act, on April 17, 2008—which seeks to stop counterfeit, adulterated or misbranded medicines coming into the hands of consumers.  The Act will be highlighted in Thursday’s Subcommittee on Health hearing within the Committee on Energy and Commerce.

Congressman Buyer is eager to advance the Safeguarding America’s Pharmaceuticals Act.  For years, Buyer has worked to bring the problem of counterfeit drugs to the attention of the American public.  H.R. 5839 is a natural fit to a hearing concerning the safety of our nation’s pharmaceutical supply chain.
