WASHINGTON, DC –January 17, 2008The City ofCampbellsville has been selected to receive a $364,000 grant through a U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development program, U.S. Representative Ron Lewis announced Thursday. The grant, combined with a $582,000 pre-approved loan, will be used to replace approximately 10 miles of waterline, install new flush hydrants, install meter reconnects, and make improvements to the water treatment plant.

“Many rural communities are facing an increasing demand for safe drinking water, adequate water treatment, and improved infrastructure for fire and emergency services,” said Lewis. “Federal grant programs are important resources for communities struggling to acquire sufficient funding for these essential projects.”

The Water and Waste Disposal Loan and Grant Assistance Program provide grants to assist in the development of essential community facilities in rural areas and towns of up to 20,000 in population. Grant funds can be used to construct, enlarge, or improve community facilities for health care, public safety, and community and public services.

Lewis has been a longtime advocate in Congress for the needs of rural communities, sponsoring legislation to strengthen rural economies and enhance social services. He is the sponsor of H.R. 1959, legislation pending in the 110th Congress to permit interest on federally guaranteed water, wastewater, and other essential community facility loans to also qualify to be tax exempt.

“Expanded assistance would improve the viability of rural lenders and reduce tax burdens on local residents,” said Lewis.
