Congressman Jefferson supports volunteerism through the GIVE Act

Washington, DC – Congressman Jefferson voted in favor of H.R. 5563, The GIVE Act: Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education. The Act includes language introduced as an amendment by Congressman Jefferson that gives priority to programs that will be carried out in federally declared disaster areas as a consequence of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

“Volunteers have made a profound impact on our recovery,” said Jefferson. “The time that people have given to build houses, lend hands and give general support have means the world to the people of New Orleans. It is important that we continue to foster and support volunteerism at all times.” The bill did not pass under suspension of the rules.

The GIVE Act:

• Increases the amount of AmeriCorps volunteers by 25 percent and provides a 20 percent increase in funding for the program

• Offers summer volunteering opportunities for youth as well and includes a $500 dollar education award to be used for college preparatory or college costs

• Strengthens the emergency response techniques of the National Civilian Community Corps to increase effectiveness

• Encourages the use of innovation in addressing technology divides in low-income communities.
