HOUSE PASSES STAR-SPANGLED BANNER TRAIL ACT

Sarbanes secures passage of first bill

July 24, 2007

Washington, DC--Congressman John Sarbanes (MD-3) today announced that the House of Representatives has passed H.R. 1388, the Star Spangled Banner National Historic Trail Act.  This legislation is the first of several bills that Congressman Sarbanes has introduced during his first term in the Congress.

“We in Maryland are fortunate to have so many historical attractions in our state and I’m thrilled to work for their preservation and recognition,” said Congressman Sarbanes. “This legislation will promote continued learning experiences for locals and visitors through education and environmental programs.”

The bill must now pass the Senate and would create a 290-mile long Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail to officially mark some of the most historic sites from the War of 1812 in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia.  Sites along the trail will include some of the most important events of the War of 1812 such as the battles between the British Navy and the American Chesapeake Flotilla in St. Leonard’s Creek in Calvert County; the battle of North Point; the burning of the U.S. Capitol and White House; and the successful American defense of Fort McHenry, which inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem that became our National Anthem as he witnessed the Battle of Baltimore and the ultimate defeat of the British.
